The figures show the loudness growth of a normal hearing person as compared to that of a hearing impaired person with a threshold at 45dB SPL. The arrows indicate the amount of gain that Beltone One! would provide through curvilinear compression in order to restore a more natural loudness growth.

The Sound Shaper

A quality hearing experience

The Beltone One! curvilinear compression was designed with Mr. Jones’ dilemma in mind. It continuously adapts to the sound input of everyday life regardless of level or frequency. From soft sound audibility to comfort for loud sounds, the advanced curvilinear compression system mimics the variable compression ratio that the human cochlea applies to sounds of different intensity. The result is a more varied and ultimately richer hearing experience.

Precise curvilinearity for comfortable loudness growth is made possible by the Rapid17 WDRC filtering technology. Based on the latest audiological and scientific knowledge, the overlapping time-domain filters make it possible to give the appropriate amount of gain – without creating echoes or digital distortion.

Lifestyle Time Constants adapt to make sure that Mr. Jones isn’t bothered by pumping effects caused by variations in input sound. Lifestyle Time Constants allow you to customize and fine-tune the attack and release times to match Mr. Jones’ needs. You’ll be able to give him syllabic, normal and automatic volume control (AVC). Adaptive attack times automatically maintain the correct activation time without introducing artifacts. And different Lifestyle Time Constants can be chosen for each listening program.

Protection that doesn’t compromise on gain

The last thing you want to do to hearing impaired people is limit their dynamic range even more. Yet that’s exactly what happens with single channel output limiters. The MPO setting must be adjusted to the lowest loudness discomfort level, without taking into account frequency-dependent UCL.

In Beltone One! the MPO level is set by frequency band. This allows you to match each user’s unique needs and maximize the usage of the residual dynamic range. For further protection, Beltone One! has another MPO activator that recognizes when several channels are overloaded and keeps the signal just under the saturation level. In this way, Mr. Jones is protected from excessively loud sounds, but he can still make the most of his natural hearing.

Completing the curvilinear compression architecture, Multi-channel MPO is aided by Silencer. Silencer was designed to work in a similar way to the human brain, with its ability to suppress irrelevant background noises. Detectors in each of the Rapid17 WDRC bands attenuate irritating sounds. So, whether it’s the humming of the refrigerator, the computer fan or distant traffic behind the window, Mr. Jones won’t be bothered by irritating background noises.

Both diagrams illustrate how the Silencer and Multi-channel MPO features complement curvilinear compression in Beltone One!

Because these features are channel-dependent, precise control of irrelevant low level noises and uncomfortably loud sounds is possible without sacrificing signal dynamics.
